Cameras with Wi-Fi

What do you actually need it for?

Wireless internet is now so common that almost every device has a Wi-Fi function, even some fridges and washing machines! Most modern cameras also feature a Wi-Fi function, but is it really that useful? And what can you actually do with it?

Wi-Fi

Exactly how Wi-Fi works differs per camera. There are cameras that can connect to an existing network, but there are also cameras that can create their own Wi-Fi signal that you can connect your smartphone or laptop to. If you always have internet everywhere or can use a network, the first option works perfectly well. However, if you go to areas where you have no signal or cannot use a network, a camera that broadcasts its own Wi-Fi signal is a better choice.

Transferring files

But what makes Wi-Fi connectivity so useful? First of all, Wi-Fi comes in handy when transferring files. In a relatively short time, you can transfer multiple files at the same time to different devices. This lets you quickly create a backup and ensures you never lose your beautiful photos, for example when you are travelling. In addition, Wi-Fi makes it easier to share photos with friends and family. Whereas before you had to take the SD card out of your camera and transfer your photos to a PC before you could send them to someone, you can now send them to anyone and everyone in an instant. Some cameras even have a function that lets you upload your photos directly to Instagram or Facebook, which is useful if you are not satisfied with the quality of photos from a smartphone camera or if you have taken such a beautiful shot that you want to share it straight away.

Time and place

Secondly, Wi-Fi is also extremely useful for keeping track of where and when you take your photos. Thanks to the Wi-Fi connection, your camera can know exactly where you have been and what time you were there. This is incredibly useful if you have been travelling and afterwards no longer remember exactly where you went. If someone asks: “Where was that?” you will never have to think long about the answer again!

Apps

Apps have been developed for most cameras with Wi-Fi. These apps are available for Canon, Sony, Nikon and more. The apps often work as interfaces to transfer or share files as quickly and easily as possible. In addition, the apps let you view, zoom in on and sometimes edit your photos. Some apps can even work as an external live view, allowing you to see on your phone what you are filming or photographing when you are working in places where this is difficult to do via your camera’s screen or viewfinder. So the apps create extra possibilities for photography.

Controlling your camera

Another way apps create more possibilities for photography is with the option to control your camera from your smartphone or tablet. Remote controls and the self-timer are a thing of the past, because with Wi-Fi all you have to do is press a button in the app. The extent to which you can control the camera remotely differs per brand and per app. There are apps where you can only adjust the most important settings remotely, but there are also apps that make it possible to set the focus point using your smartphone’s touchscreen. Either way, Wi-Fi and apps give you the opportunity to discover a new way of photography. For example, it becomes much easier to take a family photo that you are finally in as well, while still keeping control over the photo.

Wi-Fi on your camera is therefore more useful than it may seem at first glance. It makes things like transferring files easier or faster and offers extra creative possibilities.
