(Video) camera
Before you can start making videos, you naturally need a camera. The choice you make depends on your wishes and the requirements you set. Nowadays you can film with almost any camera — think DSLR, mirrorless, or a compact camera. But if you're getting started with your first professional production, opt for a professional video camera.
Microphone
After the camera, a microphone is definitely number two on the list. Being clearly audible and having a true recording of the sound is essential for videography. Due to the wide range of situations, there are different types of microphones with corresponding characteristics. The range of microphones is enormous, but for video we've broadly divided them into three types: shotgun microphones, lavalier or lapel microphones, and dynamic microphones.
Shotgun microphones
Shotgun microphones, also known as directional microphones, are microphones that can be mounted on the camera. This type of microphone is often used to record ambient sound and speech at close range. Shotgun microphones can be seen as a high-quality replacement for the built-in microphone of a camera, which doesn't always provide great sound.
Lavalier or lapel microphones
Lavalier microphones, also known as lapel microphones, are small microphones designed to be inconspicuously positioned when recording speech. The advantage of a lavalier is that less ambient noise is recorded, because the microphone is positioned close to the sound source.
Dynamic microphones
These microphones are often seen in news reports and interviews. The advantage is that the quality of the recording is relatively high, because the sensitivity is less strong than that of the previously mentioned microphones. The disadvantage is that a dynamic microphone must always be held directly in front of the mouth, making it clearly visible in the shot.
Rig
Here's the next item on the must-haves list: the rig. This is especially essential when you're working on long-duration recordings. These rigs help you provide the camera (with accessories) with a good grip, and you can also configure them to your own preference.
Gimbal
Yes, time to make sure all your videos have shake-free footage. A gimbal stabilizes the camera across multiple axes and prevents sudden movements. There are small and compact gimbals specifically for smartphones and action cameras. But also mid-sized ones for compact, mirrorless, and small DSLR cameras, and the large professional gimbals for high-end video cameras.
Lighting
Sufficient and good lighting is certainly essential for video, especially in situations where daylight is not favorable. LED lights are very popular in videography — this is due to the energy efficiency of the lights, the adjustability in color and intensity, and the color accuracy of the light.
The range of LED lights is enormous. Broadly speaking, they can be distinguished into lights for use on the camera and lights that are used separately from the camera. LED lights for use on the camera are ideal for a bit of extra light on the subject during a video report. The standalone lights are often used in studio environments.
Bags
And then you've almost got all the gear together and want to head out: the bag. A video bag provides optimal protection for your precious video camera and also offers space for lenses, microphones, lights, and other video accessories.
